PDA’s, Ebooks And When Things Go Wrong

Like many others I am a creature of habit, I find a situation or setting etc that I enjoy and continue to use/do it. When it comes to reading fanfiction for the longest time I spent hours sitting in front of my computer, chair lent back on an angle and feet up on the desk reading whatever fanfic I came across. When I used to read from the computer I’d sit here from start to finish with a story, no matter how late at night it got (for some reason reading online meant I couldn’t just stop a story part way through and then pick it up the next day - dunno why, maybe cause I’m a lazy bugger and hated having to scroll to where ever I got up to.)

Eventually though, I scrimped and saved until I had enough money to fork out for some sort of PDA (ereader) Lucky for me I came across a cheap Palm VX on ebay and quickly snatched it up :) So for a couple of years I was able to either download my favourite stories in .pdb format or save them and convert them to .doc format to read on my Palm. I was over the moon. I could now read my faves in bed, in the bath or while waiting for appointments etc. All was well in my world as I’d created a new habit with even better settings, and life was cruising along, until tragedy struck…

I was laying on my lounge, watching tv and reading my palm during the commercials when I put my palm on the floor so I could take a drink. Through a series of unfortunate and uncoordinated moves I spilt my drink all over my palm - as you can probably imagine, all hell broke loose as I quickly tried to dry my palm off and remove the excess coke from around it. After much swearing and nervous sweating I sort of got it dry and turned it on - it came on okay (big happy dance) briefly , then the backlight came on and wouldn’t go off, then the screen started to go funny with all these lines through it - then became blank other than the weird colour of the backlight.(big sad dance) After moaning and pouting I put it away. Next day I came out to it and turned it on again ( with a big wish and prayer) and got the powered by palm message - then it turned off - because I’d left it with the backlight still on I thought maybe it had just gone flat so I charged it - and after awhile it turned on, like it had been reset, so I had to go through all the stuff again to set it up.

By this point I’m smiling from ear to ear thinking that my tough old Palm was even tougher than I thought, however…

Once I’d gone through all the initial stuff I realised that the ereader wasn’t on there anymore - so I figured okay I’ll install it again - this of course meant having to dive through all my old discs trying to find the software for it - I eventually did, sort of remembered how to do it and went to hotsync it from my pc to my Palm - nothing :( I can’t get anything to move over - so now I don’t know if it’s a problem with my Palm after getting wet, a problem with the software or a problem with my cradle (it just gives me a message along the lines of it can’t connect) so while my Palm seems to sort of be working, I can no longer use it for what I want to use it for :(

So at this stage (at least until I can save up some more money to invest in a new Palm) I’m gonna have to go back to my old ways and read online from my PC - after the comfort of reading in bed, my back is already groaning at the prospect :)

Now to start figured out how I can save up for this one :)
