Take Your Favourite Stories With You - PDA’s make it easy

Palm TX HandheldFor those of us addicted to reading [tag]fanfic[/tag] it can often be an uncomfortable experience as we realise we’ve been sitting in front of the computer for several hours totally engrossed in a story.

While it can be nice to lean back on your computer chair and put your feet up on the desk as you spend an evening reading [tag]fanfiction[/tag] in one [tag]fandom[/tag] or another; wouldn’t be even nicer if you could snuggle up in bed with your favourite characters and read there instead?

I know it is for me and thankfully more and more authors and website owners in a variety of fandoms are realising it too and are making it even easier to keep up to date with our reading.

PalmOne Vx HandheldA couple of years ago I invested in a Palm VX (PDA) in fact I got it for about $30 from ebay and it’s the best thing I ever did. Now it’s simply a matter of either finding the sites that host my stories in an ebook or ereader format and downloading them straight to my PDA or if I can’t find them I can easily convert them to a format that I can read on my Palm.

The other bonus, aside from the comfort factor, is that now if I’m travelling or need to spend any time waiting anywhere etc. I can simply pull out my Palm and read my chosen fanfic - and since you can store multiple stories (novels etc) on a PDA you can pick and choose what you feel like reading at any given time.

PDA’s nowadays come in a variety of styles with many different bells and whistles, but to be honest my plain old [tag]Palm[/tag] Vx does all I need it to so you can keep the expense of purchasing one to a minimum (unless of course you like all the added extras) you can find sites that have [tag]ebooks[/tag] already formatted for you and download your ebooks for free, you can visit sites like Amazon and purchase a variety of novels (not specifically fanfiction) or you can use software to convert your saved text documents to an eReader format. (I use MakeDoc - it’s only a basic program and doesn’t give you a lot of leeway with things like adding chapter links etc but it does the job - but you can find others online -both free and paid) You can also use programs like Adobe that has an eReader to upload to your PDA.

So the next time you’re planning on settling in a reading a long story you may want to think about trying a [tag]PDA[/tag].
