The thing is that there’s an author I really like who writes in what’s probably one of my favourite fandoms so I get all excited when I see an update on her journal. But she doesn’t just write in the one fandom she writes in a few different ones. The other day I was a bit bored and figured what the hell I like her writing I’ll give one of her other stories a go. Two of the other fandoms she writes in I’d never seen the shows or really knew all the much about them, but that didn’t stop me. I jumped in and started reading and of course now I’m hooked on those as well so I’m spending half my time reading what I can find and searching for more stories in those fandoms.

Anyone else out there who gets involved in new stories/fandoms so they can follow a favourite writer? Have you started in something you’d  never heard of before because of it?

A New Year Brings New Fandoms

Here is the new one:

At Teitho, the challenge for October is Weird Tales: It’s supposed to be as general as possible to give you the opportunity to write anything fitting the spirit of Halloween: haunted houses, ghosts, vampires, werewolves, magic. Middle Earth has its fair share of dark corners. Halloween is the perfect time to explore them! Have our dynamic duo live through a scary adventure, have them meet a vengeful spirit or let them recount urban legends! The deadline for this challenge is October 25th. And in other fanfiction news (well sort of) I finally got myself a new beaut laptop - now I just need to transfer all my favourite fanfiction over to it - you’d think that would be easy wouldn’t you. Well it’s not. You see the reason I have a new beaut laptop is ’cause my desktop is dying a slow death, one of the latest problems with it is that I can’t copy/paste, or move/transfer files etc from one folder to another or from the pc to usb etc. Which means everything of importance to me that’s on my laptop (photos, stories etc) I’m having trouble getting off - at this stage I’m uploading them to my webhost and then downloading them to this laptop - very time consuming, but at least in the long run I’ll have them all - then since I’ve never learnt from my mistakes in the past - I’m actually going to put them all on another storage device (usb, cd etc) straight away.

October Teitho Plus Other Fanfic Stuff

At Teitho, the challenge for September is Crossroads: There are different angles from which you can tackle this theme. You could interpret it in a realistic manner and write about characters travelling or standing at a crossroads. If you prefer, you can of course also use the metaphorical meaning of Crossroads and write about turning points in a someone’s life - and there are as many as there are characters in Tolkien’s world! New Teitho

At Teitho, the challenge for June is Strange Encounter. What draws us to the world Tolkien created is not only the characters. To a large extent, it is also the fact that Middle Earth is a place of many wonders and surprises. To read Tolkien means exploring strange and unknown lands and people. And while Tolkien’s descriptions are full of detail, he leaves gaps as well. So who can know what creatures and wonders await at the far corners of Middle Earth - or just around the next bend in the path for that matter? New Teitho challenge

Unfortunately that won’t be the case for much longer according to this report. At the end of the year GeoCities will be closed.

As mentioned there are plenty of places to choose from when it comes to fanfic from personal pages to sites like my own fanfiction archive and fanfiction.net etc but if you have (or know of anyone) that has some old stuff hosted on GeoCities and nowhere else now is the time to move it somewhere else if you still want it available to share with others.

Over time there’s been an awful lot of incredibly good fanfic that has just disappeared from the ‘net - some of it is deliberate (the authors wanting it removed etc) some of it not (sites closing before authors have a chance to move it - and not having a backup etc)  and I’d hate to see more of it go.

If you have your stuff hosted on a GeoCities homepage and you want it to remain online please take a moment to find out where else you can host it (or if you no someone please pass the message on) there’s plenty of other hopefully more permanent places it can be archived**

Help spread the word now before more fanfic sites disappear

** as a side note if you’re interested in hosting it on your very own site or blog but don’t know where or how to start feel free to give me a yell and I’d be happy to help you get your own site set up

New Challenge At Teitho

One of the best virtual seasons I’ve come across and even if you never watched the show you can still get hooked on it. If you want to start from the beginning here’s the episode list - Virtual Season 2

Now if you did read it - and you want to know whether there’s going to be a season 3, here’s  link to a recent interview with all those involved with the virtual season.

These writers, artists and beta-readers did an incredible job - some of those writers are all time favourites of mine and there fanfics are in my to be read over and over again file while I was introduced to a few new authors who are quickly moving up my top writers list. The artwork is fantastic and after reading the interview with the betas they are incredible in their field as well .
